UTV Wheel Sizing

UTV wheels come in many different shapes and sizes. A standard UTV wheel is between 7 and 9 inches in width, and the diameter varies between 10 and 16 inches. That said, the wheels rarely measure an exact 10 or 16 inches in diameter. This is because the wheel size is actually measured with the tires mounted. Because the bead of the tire covers about half an inch of the wheel, UTV wheels are measured by rounding down to the nearest whole number.

UTV Wheel Offset

The offset of a UTV wheel is the distance from its center line to the hub mounting surface. This measurement shows how much, in inches, the wheel with stick out from the mounting surface of the hub. This affects the performance of your UTV as well as its appearance.

Wheel offsets are measured with two numbers, and both numbers together equal the total width of the wheel. The first number measures the distance from the hub mounting surface to the inner side of the wheel, while the second number measures the distance from the hub mounting surface to the outer side. When those numbers are equal, it means that the hub mounting surface is centered and the wheel is not offset. This is also called a neutral offset.

If the first number is larger than the second, it means the wheel has a positive offset, placing it further inside the vehicle frame. This reduces the overall width of your UTV.

Meanwhile, if the second number is larger than the first, this indicates a negative wheel offset – meaning that the wheels are sticking out beyond the fender. This increases the overall width of your wheelbase, which can increase stability and make room for larger tires.

UTV Wheel Bolt Pattern

The last thing to consider when choosing new wheels for your UTV is the bolt pattern. Your new wheels must have a bolt pattern that matches your UTV. There are three types of bolt patterns: 3-lug, 4-lug, and 5-lug. The size of the mounting hub is the same with each pattern, but the way the bolt patterns are measured depends on which type is used. To find out which bolt pattern your UTV uses, closely inspect the wheel bolts and count the number of lugs. Alternatively, you should be able to find this information in the user manual that came with your UTV.
